Playing Pussycat Dolls

posted on Feb 06, 2011

Pussycat Dollies, one of the many tribute bands that exist for the American pop group Pussycat Dolls, performed at the McDowell Signature Indian Derby in the city on Saturday. The five member Manchester-based band has been around for four years and plays covers of the Pussycat Dolls, at concertsaround the world.

Anna Slater, a member of the group says, "Their music is played at almost all popular venues. We follow their dance routines and make sure the audience enjoys the show."

Other than covers, the group has also composed two songs, which are so far, only popular in the UK. According to Slater, the similarities between them and the real Pussycat Dolls go far way beyond their singing styles: "We even look a lot like them! We have a lot in common."

Unfortunately, meeting the real Pussycat Dolls remains a dream for the group. "Hopefully one day it will happen," says Slater.

The quintet's last big event was in Miami, where they performed to a 'huge audience'. So how does a Brit band get their accent right, in order to ape an American group properly? "We have our own American accents, and hope they go well with the viewers. We have never had complaints so far."

Tribute bands make for big businesses internationally and their concerts are usually frequented by people who are not so well off. "Tribute bands are huge. The reason they exist is because a lot of people can't afford to attend the real band's concerts, as the tickets are priced way too high," Slater explains.

Sundance Film Festival Report: Don Cheadle, Carmen Elektra and the Pussycat Dolls, Liv Tyler, and Te

posted on Jan 21, 2011

The Sundance Film Festival is in full swing, and ReelzChannel correspondents Steve Patterson and Jeremy Parsons are in Park City, Utah, covering the event for Hollywood Dailies. They're also blogging the festival. In their first reports, we hear about their interviews with the stars of The Guard and The Ledge.

First up, Steve's report on Don Cheadle's new movie.

A big hello! from the Sundance Film Festival. This is my first time covering this event, and so far, it has not disappointed. Hollywood descends on this small town of Park City, which also happens to be stunningly beautiful! Honestly, it's a sight to behold. The streets are becoming more crowded as the hours go by, filling up with actors, executives, reporters, and, of course, movie fans!

The festival kicked off last night with the premiere of Don Cheadle's and Brendan Gleeson's new flick The Guard (part buddy cop, part action — thriller). I chatted with Cheadle about the excitement of having his movie getting picked to open the world — renown festival (and he was definitely excited), but he let me in on the frustrating side of it for some of the actors.

The action will continue to heat up as the weekend goes on. And tomorrow I get to check out a bunch of gifting lounges....hopefully walking away with some gifts to tell you about. If not, that begs the question: "Is stealing frowned upon at Sundance?" Ha! I'll keep you posted with some more blog entries as the festival continues and don't forget to follow me on Twitter (@steveatreelz for "tweetdates" (that's a word I just made up for twitter updates.)

Jeremy reports in on the Pussycat Dolls, The Ledge, and Liv Tyler.

This is my first experience at Sundance — immediate reaction — this is a blast. It's an energizing experience to see Hollywood hopefuls and elite descend on this quaint little ski village town. Today, after seeing the Pussycat Dolls headed up by Carmen Electra rehearsing for tonight's show, we trolled through the bustling crowd on main street, then headed to the Eccles Theater for the red carpet premiere of The Ledge — a philosophical thriller starring Terrence Howard, Liv Tyler, and Patrick Wilson. The stars arrived and did interviews, but this was unlike your typical Hollywood press line.

The atmosphere at Sundance breaks down the barriers and gives everyone a much more laid back demeanor that allows for some really genuine interaction. When I talked to Terrence Howard, he vividly recalled his past at Sundance. It was just a few short years ago that he was at this festival talking up a new movie that would ultimately land him an Oscar nomination — Hustle and Flow. He shared how Sundance holds a special place for him. With Oscar noms days away, he gave me his list of favorites for the golden statue. Howard has Colin Firth taking the Oscar for leading actor in The King's Speech and Christian Bale for supporting actor for "The Fighter. Since he's a veteran to the Oscar nom experience, I asked him what it's like that morning when the noms are announced. Are potential nominees anxious? Sleeping in? What's the mood? Howard said based on his experience, you just sort of know when you're getting a nomination. He feels pretty sure the actors who are on the list already know they're on the list of noms.

Moving from Terrence Howard, Liv Tyler stopped to talk. For me, I was flustered and pumped to be talking with *the Liv Tyler who lit up the screen in Armageddon — and she was just as adorably sweet in person. Funny enough, she had a hard time recalling details of her role in the movie since she filmed it so long ago. But she was happy to share what an awesome experience she has at Sundance. More to come as the days roll on in snowy Park City! Follow me on twitter movie freaks! (@jeremyatreelz)

Pussycat Dolls Burlesque Revue with Carmen Electra. In Utah? Yes. Really.

posted on Jan 20, 2011

The Pussycat Dolls Burlesque Revue with Carmen Electra hits Main Street in Park City this Friday.

Choreographer Robin Antin co-created the Pussycat Dolls Burlesque Revue in Los Angeles in 1995 and has had a hand in producing the platinum-selling pop group The Pussycat Dolls since 2003. Antin said tonight's show is inspired by the original with sexy women — including Carmen Electra, a veteran of the original show entertaining through provocative dancing, music from different eras and genres, and a healthy dose of wit. "Inside every woman is a pussycat doll," says Antin, who claims the show appeals to men and women. "It's female empowerment." Stars such as Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Scarlett Johansson and Charlize Theron have performed with the burlesque troupe in the past. The music the Dolls will perform and dance to tonight is a mash-up of modern songs (such as the Dolls' biggest hit, 2005's "Don't Cha") and songs from the 1950s and '60s that burlesque troupes have traditionally used. "It's almost like a party mix," Antin said. "Twisted, but well-thought-out." Antin will emcee and perform during tonight's show, and after her Sundance visit is planning on bringing a Pussycat Dolls troupe to Brazil and opening a Pussycat Dolls Las Vegas club at Planet Hollywood. As for the group, Antin has begun searching for new members, including a new lead singer, which, according to Antin's philosophy, could be any woman. Even my wife.

Plan B has revealed that he will be collaborating with former Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger on her new album.

The rapper, who is currently putting the finishes touches to his directorial debut, Ill Manors, said him and Scherzinger will make 'edgy' pop together.

''We had a bowl of nuts and olives on our table when we met up so I just concentrated hard on them as she was so beautiful,'' Plan B told The Sun.

He added:"I don't know what kind of direction she is going for with her new album. But anything that I do with her would be quite edgy and not straightforward pop."

Meanwhile, Plan B is set to embark on a huge UK tour this year. For more details, check out Gigwise Gig Tickets.

Tough pussycat Kimberly Wyatt

posted on Jan 07, 2011

Kimberly Wyatt says leaving Pussycat Dolls was the "hardest decision" she ever made.

The 28-year-old singer left the girl group in February 2010 and though she agonised over quitting the band, she always knew it was for the best.

She explained: "It was the hardest decision I ever had to make in my life.

"I was living the dream but I still wasn't super satisfied or happy. I knew I had to change my situation or change myself.

"It became apparent I wasn't going to be able to grow creatively any more. It was hard to figure out who I was after that. The band had been my identity for seven years – it was a lot to let go of. All I could do was listen to my heart."

Kimberley was part of the best known line up of the group, who rose to worldwide prominence with their musical debut single 'Don't Cha' alongside Jessica Sutta, Ashley Roberts, Melody Thornton, Carmit Bachar and Nicole Scherzinger in 2005, and although she describes her former group as a "machine" and "boot camp", she is still proud of her time in the band.

She added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It was a machine. I was proud to be a part of it. It was the best bootcamp I ever could have in the music industry ,but as far as creativity, writing and singing was concerned, I just wasn't part of it. The Dolls wasn't really a collaboration."

Kimberley's new group, Her Majesty And The Wolves released their debut single 'Stars In Your Eyes' this week.
